Tempo markings
Classical music often gives the tempo as an Italian word. These ranges are rough guides; editions and players differ.
| Marking | Meaning | About |
|---|---|---|
| Largo | Broadly, very slow | 40–60 BPM |
| Adagio | Slow | 66–76 BPM |
| Andante | At a walking pace | 76–108 BPM |
| Moderato | Moderately | 108–120 BPM |
| Allegro | Fast, lively | 120–168 BPM |
| Presto | Very fast | 168–200 BPM |
How to practise with a metronome
- Start slower than you think. Pick a tempo where you can play every note right, first time.
- Speed up in small steps. Add 4 or 5 BPM only after two clean run-throughs.
- Count out loud with the clicks for the first few bars.
- Slow practice is reading practice. At a slow tempo you have time to read every note instead of guessing. See checking your notes when practising alone.
